The 2026 Daegu World Masters Athletics Championships Organizing Committee (Chairman Hong Joon Pyo, Mayor of Daegu) took over the flag at the closing ceremony of the 2024 Godenberg (Sweden) Games on the 25th, officially opening the 2026 Daegu World Masters Athletics Championships.

The 2024 Godenberg World Masters Athletics Championships in Gothenburg, Sweden, wrapped up its 13-day run from Aug. 13 to Aug. 25 and held a closing ceremony.

During the competition, Daegu City dispatched a public relations team to take over the competition flag and operated a promotional booth and Hallyu experience program for the 2026 Daegu competition, receiving a lot of positive response from participants, companions, and officials. In addition, meticulous monitoring was conducted for the successful hosting of the 2026 Daegu competition through the operation of the competition, inspection of stadium facilities, WMA representatives' meetings, and team manager meetings.

In particular, he took over the flag of the Daegu Games and began the official schedule of the 2026 Daegu World Masters Athletics Championships with enthusiastic cheers from participants around the world, introducing Daegu, the host city of the next competition, with video greetings from Daegu Mayor Hong Joon Pyo at the closing ceremony on the 25th.

Meanwhile, the World Masters Athletics Championships will be held every other year, starting with the Toronto Championships in Canada in August 1975. It is a sports festival in which the masters of each age group of five, from 35 to 100 years old, participate at their own expense.

The 2026 Daegu World Masters Athletics Championships will be held from Aug. 22 to Sept. 3, 2026, with fierce competition in 35 sports. The city of Daegu expects more than 11,000 foreigners to visit Daegu to revitalize the local economy, including promoting local tourism and consumption, as the World Masters Athletics is a festival for global masters.

Daegu Mayor Hong Joon Pyo said, "Daegu is the central city of Korea with the three modern spirits of rescue, freedom, and industrialization, and has experience in hosting various international competitions," adding, "Based on Daegu's know-how, we will prepare well to make the Daegu competition the best."
