Daegu Metropolitan City held the inaugural general meeting of the organizing committee of the 2026 Daegu World Masters Athletics Competition in the conference room of the Sangyeok Government Complex on the 28th and began preparing for the competition in earnest.
According to the Daegu Metropolitan Government, Daegu Mayor Hong Joon Pyo, who has been leading the preparations for the competition, will be the chairman of the organizing committee, and Roh Ki-won, chairman of the Daegu Athletics Federation, and Sung Tae-moon, head of the Daegu Bank's marketing division, will be appointed as vice chairman to establish a support system for the success of the competition.
Starting with the inaugural general meeting, the organizing committee plans to officially launch in January next year after applying for permission to establish a corporation and registering its establishment, and accelerate preparations for the success of the 2026 competition by building facilities and infrastructure, promoting and marketing, and establishing a cooperative system with related organizations.
We will contribute to our society as a whole, including revitalizing the local economy and tourism business, as we have enough capacity and infrastructure to hold the competition, said Hong Joon Pyo, chairman of the organizing committee. "As we took the first step in leading the competition to success, we will do our best to prepare for the competition with everyone's support."
The 2026 Daegu World Masters Athletics Championships will be held in August 2026 under the auspices of the organizing committee. Over 11,000 people from 90 countries will participate in the event for 14 days to display their skills in 36 events (track 19, field 11, road 6). Meanwhile, Daegu Mayor Hong Joon Pyo, Daegu City Council Chairman Lee Man-kyu, Daegu Sports Council President Park Young-ki, Korean Association of Athletics Federations Vice Chairman Yoon Yeo-chun and Daegu Employers' Association President Kim In-nam attended the inaugural general meeting on the day, followed by reporting on the progress of the competition, approval of the articles of incorporation, appointment of executives, and award of letters of appointment.
